Your Theatre, Inc. director Eric R. Paradis of Fairhaven has cast several Southcoast area actors in the fun-filled The Gingerbread Lady by Neil Simon. This is the third major production of the 73rd Season, and is supported in part by a grant from Bristol County Savings Bank.
In the wake of Neil Simon’s passing in 2018, what better way to celebrate his work than to stage one of his most uncommon gems, a dark comedy that finds the humor in life’s biggest challenges. Our lead, Evy, has experienced her fair share of challenges, including a recent rehab stint, yet manages to take us on a ride of humorous proportions! Weaving through fast-paced scenes of the 1960’s New York social scene, Evy must navigate her daughter’s straight-laced leanings, her best friend’s struggles with vanity, and the desperation of her washed up actor friend, Jimmy, who tries to find a new “off-stage” normal. Meanwhile, her ex-lover throws yet more fuel to the fire before a tragic and touching ending that keeps you laughing through life’s curveballs.
The cast includes Nicholas Anderson of Taunton, Ryan Durkay of Fall River, Caroline Paradis and Carol Oliva of Fairhaven, Lauren Costa of Dartmouth, and R. J. Strangis of New Bedford. The production is stage managed by Brienne Riccio of Dartmouth, with costumes and settings by Mark P. Fuller, lighting design by Lawrence R. Houbre, Jr., of New Bedford, and with sound design by William Smith of Dartmouth.
Performance dates are January 9, 10, 11, 12, and 16, 17, 18, 19, 2020. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m for all performances except the 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinees. Performances are held at the wheelchair accessible Your Theatre, Inc. Playhouse, 136 Rivet St. (corner of County St.), New Bedford, at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church complex. Free off-street parking entrance is on County Street.
