The Acushnet Lions Club and the Rivers End Cafe teamed up again for the annual motorcycle run and toy drive on 12/1/19. Rivers End owner Mark DeSilva said it was the 12th year he has hosted the event.
“No kid should go without a toy at Christmas,” said Mr. DeSilva. “And the pantry needs food, so we keep helping out.”
Some very hardy motorcycle riders donated a toy or non perishable food item for the Shepherd’s Pantry in Acushnet to join the ride.
“It’s all about the kids,” said Mr. DeSilva.
A volunteer at the pantry said the toys would be sorted by age and placed on a table for patrons to choose from.
In addition to about 24 motorcycle riders, Linda Taylor from the Adam Taylor Foundation donated a carload of toys, members of the public dropped by with toys and food. At noon time, kickstands were up and they were off to the Shepherd’s Pantry in the December cold.
Jeanie Desroches was at the pantry when the truck (donated by Adams and Adams coin operated machines) pulled up and scores of volunteers unloaded the toys and food and took it all into the pantry.
“I never saw anything like it,” said Ms. Desroches, who was volunteering for the first time with the Lions Club.
