The Fairhaven Sustainability Committee announces participation in The People’s EcoChallenge from October 2-23rd. This challenge focuses on creating more environmental and social good alongside your peers and thousands of global changemakers this October.
Take the challenge, and connect the dots between your values and the impact of your actions during The People’s EcoChallenge! We would love the public to join this coming month and participate in many actions to help with this climate crisis.
Anyone from the community can participate in The People’s Challenge by joining “Team Southcoast,” which also includes UMass Dartmouth, and the entire Greater New Bedford community.

This past July, “Team Southcoast MA,” participated in Plastic Free July with 120 members strong. During that time the goal was to try to eliminate as much plastic from our daily lives as possible.Collectively the team eliminated; 448 straws, 57 disposable cups, 241 pieces of plastic cutlery, as well as held two public events, volunteered 25 hours and signed 26 petitions.
All of these actions help with the overall goal to find alternatives to plastic and realize how much each person can do individually.
The Sustainability Committee is excited to announce a “Sustainability Café” coming soon in 2020. Stay tuned on the details for this event that will bring you coffee, snacks, and ways to incorporate ecological living into your daily routine.
To kickstart the café with a campaign to reduce and reuse, the Sustainability Committee will be hosting a Halloween costume and decoration drop-off location at the Town Hall. From now until October 11, 2019, the public is invited to drop off their costumes and accessories for kids to use for Halloween (instead of buying for a one-time event!). Some guidelines: costumes should be clean, and non-violent (no gore). Don’t limit yourself to just costumes! Jewelry, scarves, crazy hats, anything that can be used for a costume as well as decorations will be accepted. Drop off will be M-F 8:30-4:30 at the Town Hall. A large bin will be located in the entrance.
On October 12, 2019, at 12:30 pm, join us at the Millicent Library basement to go through the costume submissions and see what you can find for a Halloween costume! Why shop and waste, when you can reuse?
This is a great opportunity to clean out your closet, save money, and reduce consumption.
