Although the Acushnet Fire Department cancelled its annual night ceremony commemorating the terrorist attacks on US soild= on 9/11/01, the department did mark the day by raising the flag on the ladder truck and placing flowers at the 9-11 memorial on the Fire Department grounds at 8 a.m. on 9/11/19.
Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher canceled the evening event due to the heightened threat of the EEE virus this year.
“This decision is not made lightly,” wrote the chief in a statement, noting that he consulted with health officials and other town officials.
He said the current EEE crisis is real and local people have died.
“To ignore these facts would be a disservice to those we are sworn to proect,” reads the statement.
The Acushnet 9/11 Memorial was dedicated on 9/11/11 and incorporates steel from the World Trade Center, a piece of the facade from the Pentagon, and a stone from the crash site in Pennsylvania.
It “stands as in silent testimony to our commitment that ‘Acushnet will always remember,’” wrote Chief Gallagher, and it serves a “daily reminder to the events of that tragic day.”
