Stephen O’Neill, Executive Director of the Hanover Historical Society, presented “New England Pirates” on Friday, 6/7/19, at Fairhaven Town Hall auditorium, a program of the Fairhaven Historical Society. According to Beth Luey, who attended the lecture, Mr. O’Neill explained that pirates formed their own culture and self-ruling communities. Some used the fortunes they earned to make their place in “respectable” society, but most spent their money as fast as they made it: when they came into port, bars and brothels prospered. That’s why there’s probably no buried pirate treasure. Most New England pirates ended their lives on the gallows, with their decaying bodies displayed at the entrance to Boston and other harbors as a warning to others.
