Brr…..it’s cold out there! It’s supposed to be the coldest Thanksgiving on Record. As of press time, the football game is still on schedule (see page 3), but you might want to keep an eye out for changes. Some of the other schools have changed the date or the times.
In any case the bonfire will be good and warm. I know, I know….this is a Thursday sheet, but we’re heading out on Wednesday this week. So, you have one last chance to be reminded of the bonfire.
The football game isn’t the only event that will be in the icicle region. The Turkey Trot (page 3), will get started when it is absolutely polar plunge weather. Oh… I’m mixing up my events here.
This week is our annual shopping issue. I tried to get all our advertisers in there….sure hope I didn’t forget anyone. Please make it a point to patronize local businesses first as you do your shopping this season. The little guys do more than sell stuff, they are part of the communities they are in. They contribute to the atmosphere of a place. But they are not non-profits supported by big sponsors. They are businesses trying to pay a living wage to the people who work there.
So, if you like a place, if you think it’s kind of cool that there ARE places besides the big box stores, then stop in. You don’t HAVE to buy something every time you go, but browse around, have a conversation, see what’s there. Then, the next time you want something, you’ll think of those little places that make up our New England quaintness.
And, while you’re at it, think of how important your local newspaper is. This paper is free to you, but it is most definitely not free to me. We have to pay to have it printed, then we have to pay people to deliver it, and we have to pay freelancers to help create it in the first place.
Advertisers come and go, and that’s painful (in many ways), but our readers are a very loyal group, a pretty stable number.
Please consider a donation to the Neighb News as you spend a little extra this season for the various things you are buying. I’d love to be an independently wealthy philanthropist creating a paper for the common good. But, I’m just a writer, trying to figure out how to make a living by telling people stuff that’s going on in town. If each one of my loyal readers donated just $20 a year, that would do the trick.
