A Plastic Ocean
The New Bedford Whaling Museum will present a free screening of the documentary film A Plastic Ocean, Thurs., 11/8, at 6 p.m., 18 Johnny Cake Hill, New Bedford.
Every year, 8 million tons of plastic are dumped in our oceans. A Plastic Ocean, written and directed by Craig Leeson and produced by Jo Ruxton, documents an expedition to the center of the South Pacific Ocean Gyre, a rotating ocean current, where researchers found more plastic than plankton. In A Plastic Ocean journalist Leeson and world-champion freediver Tanya Streeter highlight the newest science in a crisis with global stakes, revealing how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and are eventually consumed by humans.
