In the year 1760, twenty acres of Elnathan Pope’s farm on the Acushnet River was bought by a group of investors who laid out forty house lots, which became the nucleus of Fair-Haven.
That “twenty-acre purchase” is the location of the new walking tours offered in Fairhaven on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. The tours, guided by Howe Allen, step off from the Howe Allen Real Estate office at 43 Center Street. They will be offered each week, weather permitting, through the end of September.
On the tour, you will learn about the development of the village that survived an attack during the Revolutionary War and grew prosperous during the whaling era of the 1800s.
You will learn about some of the older homes, wharves, and businesses along Main, Middle and Water streets and hear stories about the people who lived and worked there.
Families that lived in the village included Delanos, Huttlestons, Hitches, Terrys, Tabers, Popes, and Churches—mariners, shopkeepers, ship builders, and trades people. You’ll walk past the old Fairhaven Star newspaper office, the Phoenix Building, the historical town pump, and the boyhood home of Henry H. Rogers. The tour lasts about 90 minutes.
