It’s a good thing I mostly love people, honestly. If I didn’t genuinely like most people, I probably would be in prison for belting someone. At the very least, I couldn’t d THIS job.
But, hey, ya gotta just laugh (see corrections, this page).
I got a call from an “anonymous” person (hey, I have Caller ID, I know who you are), scolding me for getting the times wrong on two events. She “was informed” that the feast ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday, she said; and this after telling everyone that the car cruise went to 9 and it only went to 8. Honestly, I wasn’t going to legitimize this foolishness with a response, but then I realized it’s all part and parcel of this attack on the press.
Let’s believe a random person in the malassadas line instead of big, huge poster hanging in front of your face on the post in front of the malassadas window.
As for Acushnet, I am NOT arguing with the police department. They posted it for 9. You wanna call ’em liars? Feel free to do it yourself. Ain’t coming from these pages.
Our cover story is one of my favorite events, but, wow, it was hot this year. Thank you to the North Fairhaven Improvement Association for handing out cold water. As I approached their building, I sat Lt. Kobza in his cruiser and told him I only walked the whole route to get the water so I wouldn’t faint. He gave me a bottle and I guzzled it down before I reached the NFIA where I got another one.
You both saved my life. And I thank you.
The malassadas were fantastic, as usual, and so was the bifana. I don’t remember what else I got, but my friend got the bacalhau, and she raved about it.
So, if you missed it this year, put the Biggest-Little Feast on your calendar for next Labor Day weekend.
On a more sober note, we have a story about Nick Coutinho on page 6. Nick was the young man who took his own life on August 5 at Fort Phoenix. His father, Mike, contacted the Neighb News because he was not happy with the small piece we ran. He wanted people to know his son was a great kid, not just a faceless suicide at Fort Phoenix. I said I’d be happy to let the world know what it lost when Nick died.
I hope it helps others who are contemplating this permanent solution to their temporary problems reconsider their options. We have had our share of suicides and other untimely deaths around here.
Most are unavoidable, but the tragedies that happen by their own hands are heartwrenchingly sad. As Nick’s sister said, there are so many what-ifs.
I’d like to thank the Coutinhos for talking to me. I think the whole community benefits from that kind of openness.
Until next week then…see ya,
