Little Bay Conservation Area is Not a Park
Just a few facts about the Little Bay Conservation Area.
1: The Little Bay Conservation area (about 70 acres), is not a park. It is a conservation area that has been owned and managed by the [Fairhaven] Conservation Commission for the last 12 years, but, sad to say, the C.C. has taken little interest in it.
2: The Public Works Department has been cutting on both sides of the bike path extension that passes through the LBCA and weedwhacking around the picnic tables, the parking lot, and the fence to the jetty, for which we are grateful.
3: On 4/8/1996, seven members of the ConCom signed a program agreement along with a person from the Mass. Executive Office of Environmental Affairs because the state reimbursed the town $184,512 (64%) for this property.
4: There were eight conditions in this program agreement, the main one being to keep it in its natural sttae as much as practicable, but passive recreation was allowed.
5: This document had to be recorded in the Registry of Deeds in New Bedford as per one of the conditions in the agreement.
6: The ConCom should have a copy of this agreement; the public works has a copy, and anyone can get a copy at the Registry of Deeds in New Bedford.
7: To this day, the state still takes an active interest in this property, if notified, if it is used for “other purposes.”
Back to number one. A park, such as Livesey Park and Cushman Park, have tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, etc. The Little Bay Conservation Area can have none of these kinds of recreation — only passive recreation is allowed.

Harbormaster and son go above and beyond
I wanted to comment on how lucky we Fairhaven residents are to have people like Tim and Todd Cox serving and protecting us as Harbormaster and Shellfish warden. These two guys went above and beyond recently and helped my wife and me out with a messy and stinky situation.
Seems that a 55 gallon barrel of filleted fish about 1/4 full, washed up on the beach behind my house. “It was heavy and smelling really bad, and I was at a loss as to how to fix this problem..
Tim and Todd to the rescue!!
They responded to my call for assistance, were really nice and just helped me clean up this problem…all on a Saturday morning!
I just wanted to say thanks and let folks know about these great guys.

Think Snow!
It’s January in 1958…I’m a fourth grade student at Oxford School. My teacher is Mrs. Irma Darwin (great, memorable teacher).
However I’m in fourth grade…it snowed last night. I wake up to a frosty window on the second floor of my North Fairhaven tenement.
I listen to the AM radio waiting for that “up lifting of the spirit” announcement from WBSM. “No school, all schools in the Greater New Bedford area.”
After a well fortified breakfast of Cheerios, I run to the garage, get my Speedway Sled and head to Dean Street in North Fairhaven.
The Town of Fairhaven has closed the road to traffic so kids could snow sled all day, which we did.
We came home tired, turned on the black and white TV to watch the Howdy Doody Show with Buffalo Bob….life was a lot simpler then.

Thanks to volunteers for beautification efforts
A few Sundays ago, we noticed two people removing the weeds from the medians on Huttleston Avenue. The weeds were beginning to grow and took away from the aesthetics of the busy roadway.
I later learned who the good citizens were! A huge thank you to Wayne Oliveira and Vicki Paquette for taking the time to help beautify our town. That was no easy task! It goes to show how just a couple of people can make a difference!
I’m sure many residents of Fairhaven join us in appreciating the effort you made. Thank you so much!!
