It’s great to see the beautiful Navigator docked in Fairhaven where it belongs. It looks great where it is, with three new poles to hold it secure, and I hope the setup is permanent.
We should be proud to have a maritime institute in town and do all we can to support it.
I only wish that sentiment was in play when the Rogers School became available. We are no closer to doing anything with that building than we were the day after the last student walked out the door.
We should have given it to the Northeast Maritime Institute when they were willing to take it off our hands. Now we’re looking at a quarter of a million dollars to “mothball” the building, on top of all the money we’ve already spent on maintenance, and on studying what to do with it.
Really?
Now that the issue is back on the table, I think their offer should be re-considered with the hope that something can still be worked out — given the amount of work the building now needs.
If we could give the building to the Northeast Maritime Institute, it would keep the building a school and keep it in the family, something I know would make Henry Huttleston Rogers happy.
