Acushnet continued its 25+ year tradition of holding the annual holiday lighting at Fire Station 1 at Parting Ways with a festive gathering on Sunday, 12/4.
Fire Chief Kevin Gallagher told the crowd that before the new fire station was built 26 years ago, the “long-standing tradition” was held
at town hall, just down the hill.
The Firefighters Association set up the Christmas display on the lawn of the fire station and welcomed the public to enjoy the official start of the Christmas season. The Ford Middle School choir led the crowd singing Christmas carols, including a rendition of “Frosty the Snowman” by the newbie firefighter, Paul Frysinger, who was pressed into action on the spot. Chief Gallagher said it would be a new tradition to make the newbie sing. So, be warned all new Acushnet Firefighters.
The crowd sang “Here Comes Santa Claus” as the Big Guy rode up in a fire truck.
Inside the station, Santa greeted children and listened to their requests. Miss Apple Peach 2017, Hailey Brightman, made a good elf, while volunteers offered free hot chocolate and cookies.
Next weekend, the town’s Department of Public Works will host a sleigh ride at the Council on Aging/Senior Center. See page 9 for listing.
