The Fairhaven High School Math Team won the championship for the entire Southeastern Massachusetts Math League for the 2016-17 season.
According to math teacher Philip Harding, the competition is “intense,” pitting only the best against the best.
“The questions are very high level math in the topics of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics and Number Theory,” said Mr. Harding in an email.
He said it is the first time FHS has won the entire league. The school has one the South Division in the past.
The team is hopeful that this year will also be a good one for the Math Team, said Mr. Harding.
“We actually unveiled [the trophy] the same day as the Patriots unveiled their Super Bowl trophy (we had a slightly smaller crowd),” wrote Mr. Harding. “However, we are hoping to start the new season off better than the Pats did! We have four out of five starters returning and a deep pool of talent looking to join them.”
Matches are held in October, November, January and February.
