The fourth annual Nopper Marine Poker Run, held this Saturday, 9/9, filled the little cove at Hoppy’s Landing with the loud “vroom vroom” of Cigarette boats as they charged off into the distance.
Although dominated by the super-fast racing boats, the poker run was not a race, exactly.
The 33 boats that entered had to go to four ports around Buzzards Bay and pick up a card at each. Best hand would win, not the first back. The event also included raffles a variety of quality items.
Organizer Heidi Pereira said the event raised $15,000 for Better Community Living, a local nonprofit that works with the disabled.
Back at Earl’s Marina, the crowd was entertained with live music and food.
Michael Cordeiro won first place, second place went to Jake Galaxy. Best looking boat was John Techron’s Skater, best looking crew was Cliff Rose’s cigarette crew.
Ms. Pereira sent a special thank you to: Rob and Caryn Sullivan for all their help with cards registration and set-up; Veronica Sullivan, Terri Brown and Justin Medeiros, for also giving her the opportunity to join a crew on the water; to Kevin Grant and Grant Properties for donation of the food from Mac’s Soda Bar; her many friends who helped in so many ways; the Fairhaven Harbormaster; Tow Boat US New Bedford.
“I want to thank everybody who sponsored and made a donation to this event,” said Ms. Pereira in a message. “It couldn’t have happened without everyone’s participation. And a special thanks to Earl’s Marina and Down the Hatch.”
Ms. Pereira said boats came from New Jersey, New Hampshire, and around Massachusetts.
“It was amazing, amazing,” said Ms. Pereira. “Totally amazing. They are still calling me today to say what an amazing event it was and ‘we’ll see you next year.’”
