Local Social Worker and Mother Fighting for Her Life Needs Community Support

April Lacey, LICSW, a New Bedford resident, devoted mother, and Clinical Team Lead at Compassionate Counseling Company in Fall River, is facing an incredibly difficult battle with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive cancer of the blood and bone marrow. For the past five years, April has dedicated herself to supporting individuals and families throughout southeastern Massachusetts. Beginning as a therapist, she went on to become a clinical supervisor and was ultimately promoted to Clinical Team Lead. With a passion for perinatal and postpartum mental health, April has helped countless mothers navigate some of life’s most vulnerable moments. Now, the woman who has spent so much of her life caring for others needs her community to rally around her.

April Lacey has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, and the family faces foreclosure on their home.. Submitted photo.

April is currently hospitalized in intensive care in Boston, where she has been battling life-threatening complications, including kidney failure requiring dialysis. Her medical team is working toward another stem cell transplant, tentatively planned for November. Meanwhile, her husband is caring for their young child while navigating the overwhelming emotional and financial toll of her illness. With the loss of income and mounting financial hardship, the family is now facing the possibility of losing their home to foreclosure. A GoFundMe has been established to help protect their home and provide financial stability while April continues this battle. Any donation, no matter the amount, or simply sharing her story could make a meaningful difference for a family that has already endured so much.
