Please join us for New Bedford Science Café on Tues., 11/3, , from 6 to 8 p.m., The Last Round Bar & Grille, 908 Purchase St., New Bedford. Open to everyone. Free, save for the beer!
Our guests will include Dr. Michael Moore, an emeritus veterinary and marine scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and Brooke Kushwaha, an environment reporter for The New Bedford Light.
Their important topic: Endangered! The Endangered Species Act and Protections for Whales & Other Creatures.
Brooke will relate what she has gleaned about the shifting landscape around endangered species regulations, including a recent memo that would legalize killing or injuring protected species by accident. This pending law and other federal changes would increase fatal threats for the North Atlantic right whale and other critically endangered species.
Michael will review vessel and fishing gear trauma that has kept North Atlantic right whales under threat of extinction. He will then describe how the shipping and fishing industries could profitably coexist with right whales more sustainably, in the absence of culpability under the Endangered Species Act.
Free parking in rear of building.
