Our guest Kevin Stokesbury, Dean of the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at UMassD, will discuss “High-Tech Leap: Catching The Right Fish.”
Back in 2012, Kevin’s team developed the SMAST open cod-end system, a technology that is evolving into a highly efficient way of collecting data on the location & abundance of cod & other groundfish. When a net is towed, a video camera captures information about the fish passing through it. Kevin will describe the next phase: Helping fishermen to use the video system during normal fishing operations so they can see what’s in their trawls in real time and avoid unwanted bycatch. This could help them avoid catching cod by mistake—and help restore the fishery, which has been in decline for decades.
Free parking in rear of building.
