Clothing Choices Reflect Values
What message are you wearing, and who or what is it connected to?
I am writing to share an observation regarding how clothing choices reflect contemporary values and community identity in Fairhaven.
Apparel featuring phrases like “One nation under God” alongside the American flag and a cross has become increasingly common. This messaging reflects the phrase added to the Pledge of Allegiance during the cold war in1954, emphasizing faith as a source of strength during times of such vulnerability.
Conversely, I have noticed lately the popularity of clothing featuring horseshoe iconography alongside the brand name “True Religion.” Historical research indicates that this symbol shares its design with the Altar of Pergamon (seat of satan) — a design later adapted for political rallies in 1930s Berlin, as Hitler’s podium. The altar of Pergamon is also referenced in the Book of Revelation. While the brand’s designer states the shape represents unity, its historical associations raise important questions about what that unity signifies and the spirit it is connected to.
Historically, various symbols have been worn to signal group affiliation, especially in war zones and the imagery on our apparel carries distinct meanings. Many individuals, particularly youth and parents, may wear these items as trends without full awareness of their background context and design. While local symbols — such as our high school’s “Blue Devils’ mascot — also prompt reflection, the commercial iconography on retail apparel warrants particular attention and concern. Along with the energy it represents.
Knowing these historical connections, I would not choose to wear imagery associated with that design. I encourage Fairhaven families to research the messages on their clothing, consider what these symbols represent, and choose apparel that conveys positive, uplifting messages to our community.
Many people were hypnotized and mesmerized by a leader in Berlin, who chose this very horseshoe shape for his podium. And to model after the altar of Pergamon. By now you can see why I felt it was critical that I write this letter to the editor and get this message out. I see more and more teens wearing this shirt and even adults, but I believe that they don’t really know what they’re wearing.
Please pay attention to the messages being sent around us, inform those who may be unaware of what they are wearing, and never be shy to stand up for Truth and Liberty under God.
