New Bedford Star Kids Scholarship Program, Newport/Fall River Star Kids, and Rhode Islanders Sponsoring Education (RISE) will host a public presentation of a new Johns Hopkins University alumni outcomes study on Thurs., 9/24, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill. Conducted by researchers from the Center for Research and Reform in Education at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, the exploratory evaluation examined the long-term experiences and outcomes of RISE and Star Kids alumni. The study included survey responses from 183 alumni and interviews with 16 alumni.
Despite significant childhood adversity among participants, the study found strong long-term outcomes. Ninety-two percent of alumni reported graduating from high school, 86% pursued education beyond high school, and 95% said RISE or Star Kids helped them succeed educationally. Additionally, 91% to 94% reported never having been arrested, incarcerated, or admitted to rehabilitation for substance use disorder.
