This weekend is a doozy, jam-packed with events of all kinds
First and foremost, there are several local events commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9-11, including one in Acushnet, and a livestream for the events at the statehouse. See page 8 for details on those.
That day is still so hard to comprehend. I was glued to the TV for days.
It brought the country together to fight the terrorists, but it als brought up a lot of bigotry and that knee-jerk reaction to strive for safety above all else. The Patriot Act was, in my opinion, mostly a mistake. We allowed for way too much government overreach because people were scared. Oh, I could go on forever, but let’s just remember what Ben Franklin said: “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
We are so far down that rabbit hole now, I fear we may never come out of it. Vote, people, vote. We need to get these scaredy-cat tough guys out.
Acushnet took a step in the right direction (see page 4). They stopped using their one Flock camera, the one that allowed them to have access to the whole nationwide system, which means that the other guys can see Acushnet, too.
The Apple Peach Festival is this weekend (page 3), and so is the Lebanese feast (page 6), and Conrad’s Walk (page 3) ..and…it goes on. There are events all through this issue, so you need to hunt for them!
But, it seems there’s something for just about everyone.
Gloria Steinem died last week. A true icon. I remember when she came to UMassD in 2008. I couldn’t get my act together enough to write something profound, so I used a quote from that event as filler on page 17.
There’s other stuff in here, of course. Thumb through to find it all, and while you do that, be sure to notice who our advertisers are so you can tell them you saw their ads in the Neighb News.
