Azorean Maritime Heritage Society awards scholarships

Since 2003, the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society has awarded scholar­ships to deserving local high school seniors and first-time college appli­cants who will be pursuing under­graduate education.  

Thanks to the generosity of our members and donors, they have grown steadily over time. AMHS is committed to helping our Portuguese-American community’s youth achieve higher education and to growing our scholarship offerings over time.

On Monday, August 10, 2026, AMHS issued six scholarships totalling $8,500.

• The Dr. Mary Vermette Scholarship of $2,000, named after the founder of AMHS, to James Almeida of Dartmouth High School. He plans to study Construction Management at Roger Williams University.

• The Faial Scholarship of $1,500 to Jane O’Connell of Glastonbury High School. She plans to study Pre-Law at Stevens Institute of Technology.

• The Pico Scholarship of $1,500 to Grace Rebello of Bishop Stang High School. She plans to study Nursing at Simmons University. 

• The Bela Vista Scholarship of $1,500 to Diwalny Nunez Hernandez of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. Diwalny plans to attend UMass Dartmouth to study Criminology with a minor in Psychology with intent to eventually study Law and become a Forensic Psychologist.

• Scholarship in Memory of Jose Pacheco Branco & Cotilde da Rosa Branco of $1,000 to Piper Reis from New Bedford High School. She plans to study Environmental Science and Public Policy at Harvard University.

• Arminda C.N.S. da Silva Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Meghan Costa from Somerset Berkley Regional High School. Meghan plans to study Elementary Educa­tion at Endicott College.
