The Boy Scouts of Troop 333 Freetown, assisted by Cub Scouts from surrounding towns, conducted a retirement ceremony on Saturday, 6/3, at Eagle’s Nest Camp at Cathedral Camp. Thousands of tired and worn American Flags were burned in an honorable and solemn ceremony.
Nearly fifty residents and parents attended the hour-long ceremony which included staff from State Representative Paul Schmid’s office and Mrs. Fred Maxfield, wife of recently deceased Troop 333 Assistant Scoutmaster Fred Maxfield, for whom the ceremony was dedicated.

Troop Committee Chairman, Michael McCormack, commented in his opening remarks, “Ralph Waldo Emerson is frequently quoted that ‘It isn’t the destination that is important, it is the journey.’”
“Scouting is a perfect example of what that journey can mean to these Scouts,” said Mr. McCormack. “Their journey included someone we’ve just lost — Mr. Maxfield. And I hope that no one will forget the lessons he left us.”
American and POW-MIA flags, as well as state flags and standards of U.S. military services had been gathered from drop-off locations in New Bedford, Fall River, Lakeville and Freetown.
