Promises
Dear Frankie,
I have been in the dumps since my human sister Beth’s wedding a couple of weeks ago. When Beth asked me to be the ring bearer, I wasn’t surprised because we are close.
At the reception, when she told me how much she would miss me and hoped my parents and I would visit often, I became distraught. It never occurred to me until then that I wouldn’t live with Beth for the rest of my life.
She always told me, and others, that I was hers. If I was hers, why wouldn’t she take me with her?
Sage
Dear Sage,
I can imagine how devastating it must have been when you realized you would not be living with Beth. When Beth said you were hers, she was expressing her love for you and her spiritual bond to you. Those feelings haven’t changed. Beth still loves you and wants to spend time with you.
What has changed is your understanding of what Beth meant — and I understand how painful it has been for you to discover. But what hasn’t changed: the bed you sleep in, the bowl you eat from, and parents who care for you.
Knowing how Beth feels about you, I wouldn’t be surprised if there were many sleep-overs in your future.
Best, Frankie
