Letter-Watch for Trash Fee Increas

June 17, 2026 by Staff Writer

Watch for Trash Fee Increase

Now that the override has been defeated look for a sizeable increase in the trash fee. There was a move afoot prior to the actual vote for the town to get your money either through the override or a sizeable increase in the trash fee.

Watch for a trash fee increase in the days ahead. Maybe as early as the next meeting of the Board of Public Works.

Remember, we were told that the original trash fee was not to cover the cost of trash services, but that it was to offset some of the cost of trash services. Now our dear leaders are seemingly looking at it to offset some of the budget shortfall. I think it is unfair for the Town Administrator or the Select Board to place that burden on the Board of Public Works. However, because that board is responsible for trash services, it must bear responsibility. I do not envy them.

In America it has gotten to a point where the voter has NO role in the process. You see it at the national, state, and local level. Democracy is dead. As a town most voters said NO to the override.

If a significant trash fee increase is coming, the town elected officials along with the TA will have answered the majority of voters and said, “We don’t care. We will do what we want. You do not matter. Your vote does not matter.”

Everyone should be outraged. This should include those who voted for the override because one day you surely will be on the wrong side of what the oligarchs decide.
