Memorial Day got washed out, but not the sentiment. People crowded into the Senior Center (see page 13) to commemorate the day.

Acushnet had better luck (see page 12), they held their event on Saturday, so they missed the rain.

Memorial Day is a solemn event, but also filled with gratitude for the sacrifices of those who fought for this country. I hope you all had a chance to take some time to reflect on the ideals this country was founded on; to listen to the words of our Constitution and appreciate the wisdom and the idealism of the founders. And to listen to or read the words of those who fought so hard to advance the cause through the decades, centuries.

The idea that all people should be treated with respect was so new, so foreign, that even our idealistic founders had to leave room for slavery. It’s the biggest black eye on this nation. One that may never heal completely. But it also shows how flawed we all are and how we can, as individuals and as a nation, rise up above our own low selves. We can live up to those ideals I heard about all weekend: freedom, justice, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

These should be for all people. All people. No one living or visiting in this country should ever have to be worried that government thugs are going to brutalize them for no reason and give them no recourse.

That happened to Blacks in this country forever, but we managed to climb up, not completely, maybe, but we were working on it.

We are being dragged back into a place that is not at all befitting of our ideals. Not one bit.

I hope you all take a little time to look back and study what this country was founded to try to be. We seem to have forgotten it.

There’s other, fun stuff in here. The open air market at Livesey Park kicked off its season this weekend (see page 6). What fun! There are lots of happenings going on this weekend. See pages 5, 11, 21 for events all  around the region.

The Select Board had a meeting (see page 3) and welcomed our new Deputy Fire Chief….yeah we know him, of course we do (see page 18).

Until next week then, see ya,

Glory to Ukraine!
Glory to the Heroes!
