Acushnet, Fairhaven, and New Bedford will all commemoriate Memorial Day this weekend. The public is encouraged to attend one or all events,, and line the streets of the parade routes to show support for our military members, and to honor those who are no longer with us.
Acushnet
Please join the Town of Acushnet and our Veterans in honoring those that gave the ultimate sacrifice at Veterans Park on Sat., 5/23, at 9:30 a.m. for our ceremony.
There will be refreshments served at Acushnet American Legion, 71 Hope Street, following the program. Inclement weather ceremony will be held indoors at Acushnet American Legion
Fairhaven Parade and Ceremony
Fiarhaven will hold its annual Memorial Day parade on Mon. 5/25. Marchers will meet at the back of the High School, corner of Main and Route 6, at 8:30 with the parade stepping off at 9:00. They will march to Riverside Cemetery where there will be a ceremony.
The public is encouraged to line the route to show support for our military members and to honor those who have passed away. Property owners along the route are encouraged to place flags on their property to show support.
If the weather does not cooperate we will have a service at the senior center at 11:00. Regardless of the weather there will be a gathering at the senior center following the ceremony, 229 Huttleston Ave. (near Stop & Shop).

New Bedford
Several events are planned throughout the City this Memorial Day weekend to honor the courageous men and women who lost their lives serving the United States.
Saturday, May 23
9 a.m. at Rural Cemetery, 149 Dartmouth St. The Greater New Bedford Civil War Roundtable will conduct its annual Remembrance Service in the Civil War section of the cemetery. Mayor Jon Mitchell will deliver the keynote address, and Bob Bromley will offer a reflection on the history of the commemoration. The program will include Civil War-era music, participants in period dress and uniform, and appropriate military honors in remembrance of fallen Civil War heroes.
Sunday, May 24
10 a.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery, 1100 Ashley Blvd. New Bedford American Legion Post One will conduct a Memorial Day exercise at the Veterans’ plot.
12 p.m. at City Hall, 133 William St. New Bedford American Legion Post One will conduct a Memorial Day exercise at the Vietnam Veterans’ Honor Roll on the William Street side of the building.
Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day)
8:15 a.m. at Rural Cemetery, 149 Dartmouth St. New Bedford American Legion Post One will conduct a Memorial Day exercise at the Veterans’ plot.
10 a.m. at Pier 3, 51 MacArthur Dr. The New Bedford Port Society’s annual Fishermen’s Memorial Day Service follows a procession from Seamen’s Bethel that begins at 9:30 a.m. The annual remembrance then begins at 10 a.m. at Pier 3 and honors the memory of those who served the United States, members of the maritime community, and all who sacrificed for others.
11:30 a.m. New Bedford Memorial Day Parade This year’s parade is presented by the City of New Bedford, the Veterans’ Services Department, the City Council, and the Veterans’ Advisory Board.
The parade will form at the intersection of Hathaway Boulevard and Parker Street beginning around 10:30 a.m. before stepping off at 11:30 a.m.
The grand marshal of this year’s parade is Jim Hartley.
The parade will march east on Parker Street to County Street, where it will turn left and head north on County Street. The parade will then turn right to head east on Pope Street, where it will make its final turn into Clasky Common Park.
There will be a Memorial Day service at the reviewing stand at the conclusion of the parade. All participants are encouraged to stay and take part in the service, which includes the reading of the Gettysburg Address, Logan’s Orders, and roll call of New Bedford veterans who have passed away.
Family and friends of veterans who have passed away are invited to bring a flower to the service and place it at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in remembrance.
