Fairhaven Fire Department Press Release

On Tues., 4/28/28 at 1:35 p.m. Holbrook Regional Communications Center dispatched this department for a reported porch fire at 86 Bridge Street, Fairhaven. While companies were responding, Fairhaven Police reported that there were flames showing. Group 4 is assigned to duty today. Engine 2, Engine 4, Ladder 1, Car 1, Car 2, and Car 3 responded and a box was struck to recall off duty personnel. New Bedford Fire Dept, Mattapoisett Fire Dept. responded to the scene for the working fire assignment and Acushnet Fire Dept. covered our station.

The building is a 2-story wood frame structure with 8 apartments equipped with an automatic sprinkler system which did not activate. The fire, which began on the exterior of the structure, had spread across the main means of egress and began to extend into the interior attic space. A primary search was conducted and all occupants had evacuated or were not currently home.

The fire was suppressed within the first several minutes. Overhaul conducted in the attic space revealed that the fire had extended approximately 2-3 feet on the underside of the roof, the surface of the insulation and duct work.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by this department. One resident had been displaced at the time this release.

Both of our Engines and Ladder were able to respond due to no other emergencies requiring our current staffing levels.

We would like to acknowledge Fairhaven Police, Fairhaven EMA and our mutual aid partners; New Bedford Fire Dept., Acushnet Fire Dept., Mattapoisett Fire Dept. Additionally, we would like to thank Mattapoisett Police Dept. for providing an ambulance for an emergency that occurred separately from this incident.
