Dear Frankie

April 29, 2026 by Staff Writer

The End of an Era

Dear Frankie,

In the last year, my mom has had several auto accidents. She didn’t hit anyone or crash into another car, but she did have to replace a fender, a side mirror, and a front grille.

Except for the accident involving driving over a low wall, the other accidents occurred while she was backing up. Our old station wagon doesn’t have a backup camera.

The other night, my siblings came to the house to tell her she had to stop driving before she caused bodily harm to someone or herself. They didn’t mention harm to me, even though I was with her during each accident. I’ll address my feelings about that in a future letter.

My mom has been crying, ranting, and complaining to her friends ever since she had that conversation about how unfair and wretched she has been treated by ungrateful brats.

Is there anything I can say or do to make her feel better?

Buckley

Dear Buckley,

It does sound like it may be time for your mom to call it quits.

You can understand, however, how difficult it is to be told that you can’t do something you have done all your adult life. This will be a big dent in your mom’s independence.

I’m sure your sibs told her about cabs, Uber, and car services, but some seniors find it hard to plan outings and call drivers.

If I were you, I would keep a low profile and be the child she can always depend on to have her back. You can never tell, it might result in a load of treats.

Best, Frankie
