Dear Frankie

December 10, 2025 by Staff Writer

Christmas Guest

Dear Frankie,

I just got a big lecture from my mom about being friendly and welcoming to Boomer, her boyfriend’s dog, who will be staying with us for three nights over Christmas.

She said I should remember the meaning of Christmas is joy and peace.

That’s all well and good for her to say, but she doesn’t have to spend time or sleep next to Boomer, who stinks, slobbers, and snores. Besides, he’s boring, lazy, and never wants to play.

Where’s the joy and peace in the holiday for me? If I had my way, I would spend the holiday with my nana, who is in the nursing home. At least it’s quiet there, and I would get a lot of snacks from her and her friends.

Should I ask my mom if I can spend the holiday with my nana?

Bert

Dear Bert,

I agree that Boomer doesn’t sound like much of a fun guy. Before asking your mother, check the nursing home’s overnight rules. Dogs may not be allowed, and the staff could find it a burden to walk and feed you.

Instead, consider asking your dog park friends to invite you for playdates or overnights. If that’s not possible, you might feign a mild illness and suggest you avoid Boomer, in case he catches it.

Remember, if none of my suggestions work, it’s only for three nights.

Best, Frankie
