When a mutual friend introduced Mark Twain and Henry Huttleston Rogers, it was the beginning of a friendship that lasted until Rogers’ death. “Twain and Rogers: In Their Own Words” is a play about that friendship, based on the letters the two men exchanged.
The play is a very Fairhaven production: Some of the letters are in the Millicent Library; the chairs on the set came from the Rogers Mansion (courtesy of the library and the Fairhaven Historical Society); the playwright, Beth Luey, lives in Fairhaven; producer/director Kiah Allaire is a recent Fairhaven High School graduate; Twain writes about his visits to Fairhaven, and Rogers tells what he really thought about the selectmen, the water company, and the fire department.
As you’d expect from Twain, there’s plenty of humor, but there’s also tragedy and the men’s efforts to console each other. And, of course, it’s being staged in the Fairhaven Town Center at the Shepherd Center for the Performing Arts.
The play will be performed on Sat., 11/15 (NOTE date correction), at 7 p.m. at the Shepherd Center for the Performing Arts, 34 Center St. (William St. entrance), Fairhaven. For tickets visit https://tinyurl.com/434fvpe9 or https://theshepherdcenter.org/ Tickets: $20 online, $25 at the door. The performance is a benefit for The Fairhaven Historical Society.
