Liking One Parent More
Dear Frankie,
The other day, I heard my mom complaining to my dad that I liked him more than her.
I do love my mom but in a different way than my dad. He’s a guy and we like to do guy things like wrestle and throw a ball.
She said she feels unappreciated because she is the one who does all the heavy lifting for me. She not only feeds me, but takes me for walks, to the dog park, and to my medical, dental, and grooming appointments.
He just laughed and said he couldn’t help it that he had a great personality and was fun to be with, wasn’t that the reason she married him.
Now she’s not talking to him or me.
Ricky
Dear Ricky,
Oh dear, talk about making matters worse.
I think you should tell your dad that his response didn’t help matters. He needs to tell your mom how much he appreciates all she does for you, and that he was only kidding and didn’t mean to hurt her feelings.
He might explain that love has many expressions and that the way you respond to him doesn’t mean that you love him more, just in a different way.
You might also talk about ways that you could respond to your mom that would make her feel more loved and appreciated. A wink here and there, a big toothy smile, a wag and a twirl on occasion, could do wonders.
Your dad might suggest to your mom that not speaking to you, because she is mad at him, isn’t the best way to win you over.
Best, Frankie
