Obituary Thomas Mendell

October 22, 2025 by Staff Writer

Thomas Mendell

Thomas Mendell, 82, of New Bedford passed away Friday, October 3, 2025 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long period of decline. He was the loving husband of 58 years to Barbara (Gibson) Mendell.  Also, he was the son of John D. Mendell and Clare (Shurtleff) Mendell. Prior to recent years, Tom lived the majority of his life in Fairhaven. He was a true Fairhavenite.

Tom is survived by his wife, daughter Kristine Mendell; son David Mendell, daughter-in-law Kelly (Guimond) Mendell with grandchildren Laura and Max Mendell.  Tom also leaves behind 3 nephews — Scott Mendell, Gregory Mendell, James Audette, 1 great niece and 3 great nephews.

Tom was a family man with the ability to enjoy or make a fun time. In his later years, his favorite activities were shopping at Market Basket, cooking, being present at his grandchildrens’ sports, playing golf and following his favorite teams on TV.

Tom excelled at a myriad of sports.  He embodied the word competitor.  His sports history includes, but not limited to: receiving the Sparrow Cup at Fairhaven High School, FHS Hall of Fame, UMass Dartmouth Hall of Fame, Coach of FHS Women’s Softball Team, Coach of Men’s Tennis at UMass, Director of Intramurals at UMass.

Tom was appointed the first Fairhaven Recreation Director in 1968 and was responsible for West Island Beach and Summer Park Program.  One of his favorite things to say was that “he was the only one who could end a gimp bracelet.”

Tom was well suited for his career as a sixth grade teacher. He learned that doing yoyo tricks and juggling were a way to get students’ attention and insert some fun in the learning.  He also enjoyed teaching chess to his students.

Tom and his wife were blessed with family and friends with whom they they enjoyed vacations and lively get-togethers — a life well-lived.

Arrangements are by the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. For memorial register, visit www.hathawayfunerals.com.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Reservation Golf Club on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 1:00 to 4:00. c•••
