Comment Utterly Abhorrent
The tragic murder of Charlie Kirk in Utah on a college campus has left many of us stunned and in deep sorrow. This cowardly act has taken a person’s life, leaving a wife, now widow, to mourn and two children to grow up without ever knowing their dad. Parents received devastating news that that no parents should ever hear, that their child was dead. This brutal killing casts a heavy shadow across our nation and our own community of Fairhaven.
Like so many others, I was saddened by this senseless crime against a man who sought to publicly engage with our youth, sharing his beliefs in patriotism, government and religion. Charlie was exercising his First Amendment rights, fostering open debate and dialogue on a university campus which must never become places where political differences are answered with violence. Political figures from all sides, Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, have joined forces to denounce these acts as attacks on all our collective values.
What adds to the heartbreak is that, in the wake of such a tragedy, some in our town have responded with ridicule and mockery instead of compassion. On the Hometown Fairhaven Uncensored Facebook page, I came across a Facebook post by Shane Sher, husband of Ann Richard, Chair of the Democratic Town Committee. His post: “Breaking: Charlie Kirk loses gun debate” in response to Mr. Kirk’s death, was utterly abhorrent and profoundly insensitive. Such responses like this are unacceptable and shows a complete lack of humanity or moral principles.
I ask, Mr. Sher that while attending the Unitarian Church that you and your family are members of, listening to your reverend speak about tolerance, compassion, and unity, did your Facebook post reveal your true nature? How unifying, compassionate, and tolerant you are by responding to Mr. Kirk’s tragic death with “Breaking: Charlie Kirk loses gun debate.” A divisive and disturbed response.
Does this capture the essence of our town? A family is grieving. A wife has lost her husband, and two children will now grow up without their father. Our actions and comments should be used to bring comfort, unity, and understanding, not ridicule and hatred. I hope and pray that we strive to be better and learn that compassion is for all.
