Dear Frankie

August 27, 2025 by Staff Writer

New School

Dear Frankie,

I received a scholarship to Haverford Canine Academy. My parents were so proud that I was accepted to such a prestigious school.

The day I got the letter of acceptance, my dad bought a Haverford decal for our car, and my mom bought Haverford hats and totes for all of us. I could have never attended without the scholarship, which covers my classes, meals, and transportation.

After two months, it has become clear that Haverford is not a good fit for me; the students frequently discuss how much they spend on everything, and they are snobs, plus the academic pressure is brutal. Many of the students have private tutors and take energy pills that help them focus. There is also a lot of cheating on tests.

I know my parents will be disappointed when I tell them I want to quit. I’m sure they will try to pressure me to stay, but I don’t have it in me.

Is there any way I can let them down easily when I break the news?

Glen

Dear Glen,

Before you tell your parents you want to quit, prepare them by talking about the things you find challenging at Haverford — the emphasis the students place on money, the social cliques, the misuse of drugs, and the cheating on exams. Point out how these are not values they taught you.

You might add that you are sure they are as disappointed as you are to learn that a school like Haverford, known for its academic excellence, lacks so sorely in terms of ethics and values.

Remind them that it was your former school that prepared you to earn a full scholarship at Haverford, and you were much happier with the learning environment there and far less stressed socially.

Give them a few days to absorb what you told them, then tell them you want to quit. If they support your decision, that’s great, if not, ask them to suggest an alternative, because Haverford is not an option.

Best, Frankie
