The Fairhaven Recreation Department’s Kool Kids Summer Program recently wrapped up “Under the Sea Week,” giving participants a hands-on introduction to marine life and ocean conservation.
Staff from the Fairhaven Marine Resource Department and Fairhaven Conservation visited the program to teach children about the importance of keeping waterways clean. Students were particularly fascinated by the demonstration of a “jellyfish bot,” a remote-controlled device designed to collect trash from Fairhaven Harbor.
The week concluded with a field trip to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, where participants saw beluga whales, seals, and sea lions, and even had the opportunity to touch stingrays.
The combination of local learning and an immersive aquarium visit gave students both a deeper appreciation of marine animals and an understanding of how to protect their habitats.
