Dear Frankie

January 22, 2025 by Staff Writer

Isolating

Dear Frankie,

On Christmas Eve, my mom and dad said they felt lousy and thought they might be coming down with the flu. I felt fine.

My dad suggested we take a Covid-19 test to be safe. When we did, we all tested positive. My mom called Nana and told her to count us out for Christmas at her house.

The Christmas holidays are a big deal in my family. This is the only time I get to be with my cousins who live far away. Since I wasn’t feeling sick, I asked my mom if I could go alone. My mom said, absolutely not. When you test positive, you are contagious for at least five days and can’t be around other dogs or humans.

Why do bad things like this always have to happen to me? Another time, when I had chicken pox, I couldn’t go to my best friend’s birthday party. Sometimes life isn’t fair.

Waffle

Dear Waffle,

Are you listening to yourself?

In both examples, you had a contagious illness and had to isolate to avoid infecting others. That’s what responsible dogs and humans do for their families and friends and the community at large, for that matter.

Missing a celebration with people you love and enjoy being with is disappointing. However, two missed celebrations in a lifetime aren’t having bad things “always” happening to you.

If these are the worst things you must suffer, believe me, you should consider yourself lucky.

Best, Frankie
