“Thanks to the Acushnet Council on Aging and the ‘Meals on Wheels’ program our firefighters visited 24 homes of Acushnet seniors and installed 62 carbon monoxide detectors,” according to the Acushnet Fire & EMS Department’s Facebook page, posted on 3/13. “Most of the homes were without any CO detectors and all are now code compliant. Collin’s Challenge is making a very big difference in many people’s lives!”
Collin’s Challenge is an initiative by the Acushnet Police, Fire and School Departments started in response to the accidental carbon monoxide deaths of nine-year-old Collin Lopes and his father Joseph “JP” Lopes, 41, in December.
The campaign ended on January 31, which would have been Collin’s 10th birthday, but residents are still encouraged to contact the fire or police department. The detectors were donated by local businesses and individuals through donations. Previously, 70 CO detectors were installed in Acushnet homes and 47 were dropped off at schools.
