I was listening to President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress with much anticipation. I wasn’t disappointed. He looked, spoke and conducted himself in a manner that defines what a president should be. I thought he was being considerate in reaching out to Democrats to put aside theit differences for the greater good of the country.
Let me say at this point that he wasn’t my choice for president at first. Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz were my choices. However, I changed my mind about him. I became convinced that he was in it for his country and his family.
He became the voic eof the forgotten middle class, the ones who fought and died for our country. The factory workers who saw jobs going overseas caused by repressive regulation and high taxes by a government that in its high-handed way thinks it knows best for the working class. A people who saw a president who was apologizing for our country, who were appalled by the ravages of ISIS brought about to a great extent by President Obama’s failure to acknowledge the threat of radical Islam, who pulled all of our troops out of Iraq, who drew a red linle in Syria and did nothing when President Assad violated it.
When Secretary Hillary Clinton left ambassador Christopher Stevens in Libya to die when the attack went on for 13 hours and she didn’t as much as send a plane over there. She lied about it together with President Obama when they said it was in response to a video of Muhammad. There is tape where she states in her own words she says it was a terrorist attack.
Now to the problem of illegal immigration. There is no nation in the world without borders. As a sovereign nation we have every right to protect our borders and to say who can and how many can immigrate here.
Both my wife and her mother are immigrants from Portugal. Now I can tell you my mother-in-law’s citizenship was a process that took several years. She had to study Untied States history and successfullyi pass a test to receive her citizenship. She went on to read, write and speak English.
Trump spoke correctly about who our enemy uis, it’s radical Islam that has sworn to wipe out Israel and kill Americans. He has identified the countries which harbor these killers. He spoke about our border with Mexido and the flood tide of drugs and criminals coming over our border with Mexico.
For myself, I believe I am a compassionate person. I support charities like Samaritan’s Purse, which provides food, shelter, medical assistance in the name of Jesus Christ throughout the world. I support Shriners and help sponsor a child in Columbia through Children’s International. That being said, I strongly oppose sanctuary cities that harbor illegal aliens. I say for those who are here illegally, give them a chance to sign up and if they haven’t committed any serious crimes and are working, give them a right to work and a path to citizenship. For those who are born here they are ciizens who have a responsibility to respect and observe our laws.
To conclude, let’s put America first, honor and respect our heritage and the men and women who fought and died for it, and recognize our Christian heritage and pray to God to protect and guide us.
Sincerely and thanks,
John Pond, Fairhaven.
