Plumbline Time
If Something Looks off Balance,
Bring out the Plumbline.
Dear Town Meeting Members,
All builders know what a plumb line is. But for anyone who may not know, a plumb line is a measuring tool used to measure vertical lines and alignment.
This simple tool and the absolute principles behind it consistently and accurately defines horizontal and vertical planes, and has allowed for the complex construction of buildings, canals, and pyramids.
• In construction, a plumb line is used to test if walls are straight, and structures are stable.
• A plumb line can be used to measure vertical lines and align elements in a drawing
• A plumb line can be used to find the depth of water.
• A plumb line is a piece of string or thread with a weight attached to one end. Used for horizontal comparisons and point-to-point measurements.
In short, the plumbline can guide you to make the crooked places straight.
The design of a plumb line has remained relatively unchanged over thousands of years. It is so ancient the mention of the plumb line is even in the Old Testament.
7- Thus He shewed me: and behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in his hand.
8- And the Lord said unto me. Amos what seest thou? And I said, A plumbline. Then said the Lord, Behold. I will set a plumbline in the midst of my people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more. Amos 7:8 KJV
The Book of Amos is about social justice.
Amos has been called the plumb line prophet because he had a vision of God standing by a wall with a plumb line in His hand. The plumb line sets the standard and it does not change with the whim of the builders. It remains true and all work must line up with it. In Amos’s prophecy, God was using the plumb line to measure faithfulness to His Law. Sadly, they did not line up.
Does this happen in our day too?
The principles and laws behind something as seen in the use of something as simple as the tool as the plumb line, are exacting and absolute.
Applying basic moral laws and principles that are available to us, for example, as through zoning laws and bylaws, that correspond with our constitutional rights and provide protection. These laws are good and were created not to harm anyone, but to bless us all. And to help each of us keep a firm foundation on the straight path to peace, and to the pursuit of happiness and prosperity.
Any changes in law, if they come, should align under the laws of the One who holds the plumb line. That same One, whom we pledge our Allegiance. Thus assuring to all who live in Fairhaven, that they will be blessed and benefited.
I hope the Town Meeting Members will bring their plumb lines as they weigh in and measure out their voting decisions on November 19, 2024
Michelle Costen-Fairhaven
