The Lloyd Center for the Environment held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new Welcome Center on 9/20/24. The new structure, has been constructed to greet, orient, and introduce students and visitors to the Lloyd Center for the Environment.
Housing a bus drop-off shelter, interior and exterior meeting and teaching space, information displays, grey water and rain gardens and composting restrooms, this Living Building Challenge™ (LBC™) 960-square-foot building is a state-of-the-art, net energy and net water positive structure. LBC™ is an international certification program of the International Living Future Institute™ (http:// living-future.org/), the building industry’s most ambitious sustainable construction performance standards. The Welcome Center is the only public LBC™ building in Southcoast Massachusetts, and the only one in the world constructed by students (over 1,000 students have worked on this building).
Students from the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School (GNB-Voc-Tech) constructed the Welcome Center and additional components. GNB-Voc-Tech welcomed this unprecedented opportunity to teach students about the highest level of green construction, and the Lloyd Center is excited by the opportunity to expand its experiential environmental education programs.
This building provides an opportunity, for students and community members alike, to learn about both environmental issues and what is possible in green construction. The Welcome Center stands as a building that encapsulates the Lloyd Center’s mission and welcomes all to the 82-acre campus at 430 Potomska Road, Dartmouth.
The property offers more than five miles of walking trails, the “Bridge to Discovery” dock on the Slocum River, vernal pools, oak-hickory forest, freshwater wetlands, salt marsh, and estuary views. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, free to the public. To learn more, visit www. lloydcenter.org or call 774-628-9241.
