Are you Sure?
Dear Frankie,
Lucy has been my best friend since we were puppies. We share a seat on the bus, do our homework together, and tell one another our secrets.
Lucy’s mom has a tea party every summer for Lucy’s close friends and their moms.
A couple of weeks ago, my mom asked me if I knew the date for the party. On the bus the next day, I asked Lucy, and she started to cough and said she’d better sit in another seat because she didn’t want me to catch her cold.
Lucy made a beeline for the principal’s office when we arrived. Later, I saw her leave the building with her mom, crying.
I asked George if he knew why Lucy was upset and he said she was afraid when I found out I hadn’t been invited to the party, I wouldn’t want to be her friend. He said he often saw this happening between friends and family members with different political views.
Do you think we weren’t invited because my mom works on the presidential campaign?
Flavia
Dear Flavia,
I would need more information to say that politics was why you and your mom weren’t invited.
George is correct; the political climate is tense these days and is causing many problems and estrangements between friends and family members. You can only know why you weren’t invited to the party by asking Lucy.
If she confirms that she was afraid you would dump her, assure her there is no reason to be upset, you value her as a friend, understand she is not responsible for her mother’s decision, and don’t want your parents’ political views to stand in the way of your friendship.
Tell her if she’s good, you’re good.
Best, Frankie
