Azorean Maritime Heritage Society awards 9 scholarships

Since 2003, the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society has awarded scholar­ships to deserving local high school senior and first-time college applicants who will be pursuing undergraduate education.

Thanks to the generosity of our members and donors, they have grown steadily over time. AMHS is com­mitted to helping our Portuguese-American community’s youth achieve higher education and to growing our scholarship offerings over time.

On Monday, August 12, 2024, AMHS issued nine scholarships totalling $9,500:

• The Dr. Mary Vermette Scholar­ship of $1,500, named after the founder of AMHS, to Andre Ribeiro Capataz of Dartmouth High School. He plans to study Finance/Business at University of Conn.

• The Faial Scholarship of $1,000 to Lilly Baptiste of Dartmouth High School. She plans to attend Umass Dartmouth to major in Architecture & Interior Design.

• The Pico Scholarship of $1,000 to Roger Jackman of Bishop Stang High School. He plans to study Adver­tising at the University of Oregon.

• The Bela Vista Scholarship of $1,000 to Avery Carvalho of Westport High School. Avery plans to attend Boston College to study Finance with a Pre-law track.

• The Maria Jose & Diamantino Fidalgo Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Zachary Dias from New Bedford Voc Tech High School. He plans to study Business Manage­ment at Umass Dartmouth

• Scholarship in Memory of Jose Pacheco Branco of $1,000 to Lucas Correia from Fairhaven High School. He plans to study Health Sciences with a Physical Therapy focus at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences.

• Scholarship in Memory of Clotilde da Rosa Branco of $1,000 to Gabriel Correia from Fairhaven High School. He plans to study Entrepreneurship at Johnson & Wales University.

• Irene Medeiros Memorial Scholar­ship of $1,000 to Ryan Lynn Paiva from Fairhaven High School. She plans to study Special Education at Bridgewater State University.

• Arminda C.N.S. da Silva Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 to Caiden Demanche from Dartmouth High School. He plans to study Secondary Education-History at Umass Amherst.
