The Millicent Library is currently undergoing chimney repairs necessitating the installation of scaffolding earlier this year. The catalyst for these repairs traces back to late 2019 when water ingress began plaguing several areas of the building where the chimneys are situated. In the Youth Services section, the situation escalated to the extent that the librarian’s desk had to be relocated due to leaking water and falling plaster flakes.
Consultation with an architect revealed that frequent and intense rainstorms were exacerbating the water infiltration issue. Following a comprehensive assessment of the chimneys, a detailed scope of work with cost estimates was formulated. Funding for the project was secured through the Town of Fairhaven Community Preservation Committee.
Progress faced a setback with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, a new project architect had to be enlisted, leading to the engagement of Stephen Kelleher Architects, Inc. of Fairhaven.
Following a public bidding process, Folan Waterproofing and Construction was appointed to carry out the necessary repairs.
Due to the nature of the terracotta material used in the chimneys, specific weather conditions are required for the repair work to commence safely. The onset of spring marked the beginning of the repair process. Initial steps involved applying various terracotta samples to match the existing material, followed by a curing period of about 14 days. Once the suitable terracotta sample was identified, the necessary materials were ordered, and repair work has commenced.
The Millicent Library does not anticipate that the repair work will interfere with the operations of the library. However, noise levels from the work may be elevated at times.
Upon completion of the chimney repairs, a comprehensive water test will be conducted to ensure the efficacy of the repairs. Roof shingle and flashing repairs were finalized last fall, with the restoration of the chimneys slated for completion by early July, weather permitting.
The funding for this project is made possible by the Fairhaven Community Preservation Committee through the Community Preservation Act (CPA). This act serves as a crucial tool in preserving our town’s open spaces, historic resources, land of recreation, and community housing. Established in 2005, the Fairhaven Community Preservation Committee oversees the local Community Preservation Fund, which supports projects like this one. With the Committee’s support through CPA, we can ensure the preservation of our town’s rich history and heritage for generations to come.
