Crazy hair, crazy clothes and crazy fun combine to create hundreds of kind acts in Fairhaven. Both elementary schools are participating in the “Great Kindness Challenge” this week.
The national event includes a checklist of 50 kind acts to be accomplished at school during the week of January 23–27. Hopefully, students will continue their kind acts at home and after the week.
“The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive and positive bullying prevention initiative that improves school climate and increases student engagement,” according to the website. “Using the provided checklist of 50 kind acts, students accept the challenge and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!”
The list includes acts like smiling at 25 people, complimenting five people, picking up trash, helping a younger student, saying “thank you” to the custodian, librarian and the volunteers, and giving your friend a high five.
The website boasts more than 250 million acts of kindness in 2016.
At the Leroy L. Wood School students were enjoying “Crazy for Kindness Dress Day,” allowing them to wear crazy clothes and crazy hair on Tuesday. On Wednesday they will make “Kindness Flowers” to share in the community.
At East Fairhaven School, Tuesday was Superhero Day, with students and teachers alike dressed as Superman (or woman), and various other Caped Crusaders.

Wood School principal Amy Hartley-Matteson said the EFS said, “Our school is cool, so they sent all of our kids popsicles.”
She said they had a plan to meet the challenge: They will give kindness flowers to EFS and to residents at Our Lady’s Haven because “Kindness grows and blossoms.”
Logan, a first-grader at Wood, said he liked the day, “Because you get to wear whatever you like.”
“You can dress up in anything that’s crazy,” said Maitea.
