The 11th West Island 5K saw 209 registered runners/walkers, with 33 registered for the Kids Mile, on Sunday, 4/21/24.
For the kids, Sal Kerdi finished first in 6:25; with Denver Simala second in 6:30; and Solomom Barrett third in 7:46. For the girls, Vera Moran came in first in 8:21; Ellie Shivers took second in 8:25; and Virginia Gonsalves came in third with 9:19.
In the 5K, top finisher was John Schilkowsky, 32, of Providence, RI, in 15:53; Robert Norcott, 42, of Berkley, MA, took second in 17:44; and third place winner was Matt Keys, 31, of Newton Center, MA, in 19:10.
For the women, Nancy McGee, 41, of Marion, came in first in 19:52; Hailey Desmarais, 18, from Assonet, came in second in 20:13; and Mary Cass, 62, from Westport, came in third in 33:22.
The race also awarded medals for top finishers in age categories for both men and women.
Organizer Lyle Drew began the race to benefit the Fairhaven High School cross country track team. This year’s proceeds benefit the team and the West Island Improvement Association.
