Silly Season is Upon Us
Welcome to Silly Season! As someone who has run for office in the past, I know it’s not easy to “put yourself” out there; so I commend anyone who puts their name on the ballot. There are a few rules to putting yourself on the ballot and I want to remind you of them.
First of all, and this goes to the people who are currently in office, “leave the theatrics” at home! Whether you are aware or not, there are cameras that record all meetings, so rolling your eyes and breathing deeply when another “team” member of your board speaks is unprofessional and basically rude! If you don’t agree with the opinion of another, count backwards to yourself from 10 and breathe!
#2: Be careful who you choose as your “mentor.” If you have had any violations or mistruths with the Town, it’ll come out now and your buddy might not be your buddy after all. (He/she will probably throw you under the bus in a heartbeat!)
#3: People who are already voted in need to remain neutral. Don’t ask them for their opinion and don’t rely on it. Ask the Town voters!
#4: Most of us know that voting sometimes comes down to your personality. Don’t try to be the smartest one in the room…most of us want to hear your honest opinion, don’t try to answer like you think we want you to answer!
And Lastly: Be yourself. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Period. Don’t promise anything during a campaign, especially if you can’t produce or don’t want to produce after the fact.
Good luck to ALL the candidates running!
