The City of New Bedford is seeking proposals from artists for a permanent Herman Melville sculpture in the downtown historic district. An advisory committee will select up to three artists as semi-finalists to be awarded a $2,500 stipend for the development of a proposal, travel, and overnight accommodation for presentation.
“New Bedford is the setting for what is arguably the preeminent work of American literature,” Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “The novel has had a profound influence on artists the world over and on American culture itself.”
Artist proposals need to include an artist statement, statement of interest, resume or CV, work samples, and an estimated budget.
Application deadline is Friday, February 16, 2024. Visit http://tinyurl.com/3up7r7w9 to access the application and for more information. Email HermanMelvilleStatue@gmail.com
