Hastings Middle School will be sending a student to compete in the regionals for the Patriots Pen Awards, a national program conduced by the Veterans of Foreign Affairs (VFW). Locally, the contest is sponsored by the VFW in Fairhaven, who judged essays based on the them, “How are you inspired by America?”
The competition encourages students to use their minds and knowledge of America’s history and their experience of today’s American society to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. The contest is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8.
This year’s winners are: first place, Giavanna Randall, who will go on to compete in the regionals; Louie Jia, second place; Jaelynn DaSilva, third place.
