Are we there yet?
Almost…almost.
This is our LAST ISSUE of the year. We are going on our winter break and will not return until 1/4/24. So, take your time reading, but not too much time. Some events are coming up you’ll want to join, like…um, the Polar Plunge? BRR.
We have some meeting coverage in here. See Acushnet Selectboard on page 17, and Fairhaven Select Board on page 4. Oh, Mr. Carr. You really, really, really want to be on ZBA, huh? I mean, you’d think it paid money or something. Someone pointed out to me that you said you would resign that position anyway, if you got elected to the Planning Board. So, what happened? What changed your mind? Now that’s something that has to “be known.”
We have a jam-packed issue, so I had to ditch the annual Christmas lights photos. Sorry about that. But see pages 5, 6, and 7 for fun events.
And, well, just drive around and see for yourself who has lights up. Gellette Road is back at it (see page 5) with Santa, too.
Our cover story is a serious one, and one that is not getting easier with time. Young Matthew Rodriguez of Fairhaven was killed 10 years ago in Afghanistan. In honor of that milestone, the family got the Fallen Heroes Memorial to New Bedford.
Young Matthew was remembered by those who knew him best at a ceremony on Monday. They talked about his smile. I have to say, the photos of him show it in a big way. They call him the smiling warrior, and you will see why when you see that big grin.
Our hearts go out to the Rodriguez family with sadness and gratitude. We can honor young Matthew and his family by simply remembering him. See page 12.
We are now just seconds away from starting our winter break for the holidays.
I wish you all a very merry holiday season. I hope you are able to enjoy whatever holiday you celebrate with family and good friends, those who lift you up, energize you, inspire you, and make you laugh. That’s the magic of Christmas. May it spread through your life and the lives of those around you and bring lots of good (and bad-for-you) food with it. And may we all have a healthy and prosperous New Year.
