Our guest, Kate O’Connor-Giles, the Provost Associate Professor of Brain Science at Brown University, will discuss “Designer Fruit Flies: Using CRISPR to Study Brain Development and Genetic Brain Disorders.”
Ten years ago, the adaptation of CRISPR (a genome editing system that occurs naturally in bacteria to kill invading viruses) took the world by storm by giving researchers a simple tool for gene editing and exploring genomes. We’re extremely fortunate to have Kate as our guest, given that she and her collaborators were the first to develop CRISPR approaches for gene editing in fruit flies, a popular organism for biological research. She’ll tell us about her lab’s work to identify genes involved in neurodevelopment and how CRISPR has changed what is possible in the lab. She’ll also answer our questions about where CRISPR came from and how it works, and outlooks for the future of gene editing.
